Calypso

Calypso-
Calypso Daughter
of Titan Atlas & Mother
 Tethys.
Kalypso was a great character in the Movie Pirates of the Caribbean. So I decided to look her up in the Greek Mythology... I thought she would be a great story for you all to read and for me to write and learn about. Kalypso or Calypso either way was the Goddess Nymph of the Mythical Island of Ogygia. She was the daughter of the Titan Atlas. So this would give you the idea why she was such a strong and powerful Goddess Nymph of the Sea compared to most of the other sea nymphs. It was that her Father was
the Titan Atlas. [note later I plan to do a post on her father Atlas. I find that would be a very interesting post
too]. Calypso was also one of the Oceanides sea nymphs and her mother was Tethys. Calypso name is related to the Greek word καλύπτω, which means 'To conceal' and she also symbolized the forces that divert men from their goal. Which make perfect since if you are familiar with the tale. If not I will be going thought the tale. In the tale of the Sea Nymph Calypso - in Greek mythology, she seduces Odysseus
and keeps him on her island for seven years away from his wife, Penelope, until Athena intervened;
Eventually Calypso has to to let Odysseus go and even helped him to build his boat back so that he can make it back to his wife Penelope. In the Greek Mythology she has both the negative an positive connotations
with her: These are as a concealer and seductress. In one way you could see Calypso as a negative symbol as she keeps Odysseus and his grew captive for seven years on her Island of Ogygia, but she is also a
rescuer too, so she is looked in a positive note too. Calypso is always being compared  to Penelope and
thus force to to give in to the wishes of Odysseus in End..
Calypso Island Cave
I thought I would also give you a little bit about Calypso history and background too. This is the Greek Mythology background.. Calypso  lived on the island of Ogygia, where she was ousted as a prisoner
because she supported her father - Atlas Titan - in his battles between the Titans and the Olympians of
the Gods. Now where this island is - still is unknown to this day and there are many versions of its possible
locations. How the story of Calypso and Odysseus got its start was by Homer and the common belief
among most is the island is mythical, but that is just historians not all!  There are some that believe that the
On the Island of Ogygia entertaining Odysseus
and what was left of his grew of his ship
Island was located in the western Mediterranean Sea - or more precisely in the Ionian Sea... So its just what
you what to believe? On with the Tale.. On the Island of Ogygia, Calypso would welcome the exhausted
Greek hero, Odysseus, who had drifted for nine days in the open sea after losing his ship and his army to the
Monsters of Italy and Sicly when coming back home from Troy during the war. During that time the Sea nymph Calypso fell deeply in love with Odysseus
and wanted to make him her immortal husband and give him the eternal youth. However Odysseus did not

accept her generosity. All he could do is dream about his wife and finding away to get make to her and his
country Ithaca. This of course didn't stop Calypso at all! She was so much in love with Odysseus she
continued to ofter gifts, kept hoping to seducing Odysseus and eventually make him her lover.
Well it seemed to work for 7years in her breath-taking cave-home. And it is said that they even had two
children together called: Nausithous and Nausinous. It was said that Calypso bore Odysseus a son by the
name of Latinus. I don't remember this part of the tale of Calypso and Odysseus having children together..
that is kinda cool.. Kinda makes you wondered was Odysseus really imprisoned by the Sea Nymph Calypso
or was his longing for his wife weakened so much over the seven years that Calypso was able to comfort
and love him as if she was his wife? and he forgot his wife Penelope and home land?  These are many questions that have been always curious to what really happen on the island of Ogygia? And if the
Message God Hermes Persuading
Calypso to let Odysseus to go home..by Zeus
Orders..
Goddesses Athena hadn't asked Zeus to 'Save' Odysseus from the Island Ogygia and Calypso?

What would have happened to the tale? There have been many didn't versions done of the Mythology
Greek Nymph Calypso too.. I will cover that in a little bit... So as the tale goes Zeus did follow through with
the Goddesses Athena request to save Odysseus from the Island of Ogygia and the Calypso, by sending the messenger of the Gods, Hermes to persuade Calypso to let Odysseus go home. Athena knew that
Calypso couldn't refuse the God Zeus, the King of the Gods of Olympians, but being somewhat fearful of
Zeus and his powers an angry came through her personality too. Which could have come from her father side I am sure of it in my opinion. So in Calypso angry she had something like this to say to Hermes 'Cruel
Question? Did Odysseus really want to
Leave this Enchanted Place?
folk you are, unmatched for jealousy, You Gods who cannot bear to let a Goddess sleep with a man, even if it is done without concealment and she has chosen him as her lawful consort' found in (Homer, Odyssey 5.120). So after all was done Calypso still helped Odysseus build a new strong boat that would take him and
his skeleton crew back to his wife and his Ithaca. She also provided enough food and wine for the entire journey, and good weather too. It is said in the end of this tale that Calypso had believe in her own heart of hearts had saved Odysseus and after losing her only lover of sever year tried to kill herself, but since she
Or did He really want to
Go Home?
being immortal she could only go through the terrible pain and suffering of a lost of a lover.
How the question is that always been asked and the Mythology Calypso had been created in the movies twice that I know of - What if Athena and Zeus had not intervened? how would this mythology tale have
ended? Would Odysseus have ever thought of building a ship to leave the island to be with his wife. Did
he even want to leave after the 7years and having 2children with the beautiful Sea Nymph Calypso in the Enchanted Cave? Do you think that the Sea Nymph Calypso had such strong magical powers over
Odysseus and his crew so that they never wanted to leave? And do you thing if the Gods of the Olympians didn't enter the picture we would have a whole different tale? I believe we would Yes !!!
It would be interesting to hear what you all think..
I've included a story brief of the mythology of Calypso for you reading and if you would like to read more
all you have to do is click on the link after this Enjoy...
KALYPSO (or Calypso) was the goddess Nymph of the mythical island of Ogygia, a daughter of the Titan Atlas. She detained the hero Odysseus for many years during his wanderings after the fall of Troy.
The tale begins when all those who had escaped the pit of destruction [the war at Troy] were safe in their own lands, spared by the wars and seas. Only Odysseus was held elsewhere, pining for home and wife; the Nymph Kalypso (Calypso), a goddess of strange power and beauty, had kept him captive within her arching caverns, yearning for him to be her husband. And when there came with revolving seasons the year that the gods had set for his journey home to Ithaka, not even then was he past his troubles, not even then was he with his own people. For though all the gods beside had compassion on him, Poseidon's anger was unabated against the hero until he returned to his own land . . .
The other gods were gathered together [in council] in the palace of Olympian Zeus . . . Athene, goddess of gleaming eyes made answer: ‘. . . It is for Odysseus my heart is wrung--so subtle a man and so ill-starred; he has long been far from everything that he loves, desolate in a wave-washed island, a wooded island, the navel of all the seas. A goddess has made her dwelling there whose father is Atlas the magician; he knows the depths of all the seas, and he, no other, guards the tall pillars that keep the sky and the earth apart. His daughter it is who keeps poor Odysseus pining there, and who seeks continually with her soft and coaxing words to beguile him into forgetting Ithaka; but he--he would be well content to see even the smoke rising up from his own land, and he longs to die . . . O son of Kronos, father of us and sovereign ruler, if indeed the blessed gods now wish that shrewd Odysseus should come to his own land again, then let us instruct the radiant Hermes, the Messenger, to go to the island of Ogygia and without delay to tell the Nymph of the braided tresses our firm decree that staunch Odysseus is to depart and journey home.’

Vanessa Williams as Calypso
Now as I said I would mention the other versions they have done of the Calypso .. There are two different movies that I know of and in each she is portray very different that in the Mythology Calypso In my
opinion.. The first was ["The Odyssey" has won an Emmy in 1997',Odysseus, King of Ithaka, leaves his wife and his new-born son to fight against the Trojans. With luck and tricky style he ends the war. Blended from his victory he challenges the gods but this time he loses and from now on he struggles through a never ending adventure to get back home.]

The link will show you many different movies that they have done about the Sea Nymph Calypso~
Naomi Harris the Actress
Who played Tia Dalma &
Calypso

They also did the different version of the Calypso in the Pirates of the Caribbean with Calypso falls in love
with a pirate called Davy Jones which is a bit far from the original Mythology Greek tale. I found it to be
a little to far from the original tale at first, but the more I did the post I felt that the version did show the strength, power and grace that the original Calypso had in her days in of the Greeks and the Titian's. As all the Greeks Gods and Goddesses have had such wonderful and interesting lives that their lives still live on forever. And it was a great movie too!. Here a bit of that tale...Calypso was a sea goddess and daughter of the Titian Atlas. In the days of Myth and legends she was the beautiful Calypso, that ruled the seas, and all the sailors that
sailed in her oceans. It was said that the sailors both loved and feared her, even though she too had mortal blood. As a Heathen Goddess, Calypso was able to take many forms, but since the crabs of the sea were attributed as her symbol, she chose that form.
Tia Dalma /[Naomi Harris the actress]
Calypso Took over Tia Dalma's
Body as Calypso in the Movie
According to one particular legend of the Sea Nymph, Calypso fell in love with a young sailor by the  named Davy Jones. And she rewarded that love by giving Davy Jones the ship called the Flying Dutchman as well as the sacred task of collecting all the poor souls who died at sea. And with the Flying Dutchman ship he was to ferrying them to the worlds beyond. Because of his love for the Calypso, Davy Jones agreed to set foot on land only once every ten years. This is where Davy Jones would be free to come ashore to be with his love of his life
Calypso. However, when Davy Jones came ashore after his ten year duty, Calypso was nowhere to be found, for the seas are fickle and unpredictable, as was the powerful goddess who ruled that domain. So Davy Jones plotted with the First Brethren Court, unbeknown st to Calypso, where they would put terror and also they would rule all the seas away from the Sea Goddess. Then they would imprison her into a mortal body of an woman they called Tia Dalma for many
Tia Dalma as Calypso
many Years. UN to know to Davy Jones and his crew what he has created by doing this act toward the sea Goddess Calypso, she would have her wrath in a Grand way years later. The imprisoned Calypso assumed the alias of a Voodoo Mystic by the name of Tia Dalma. It wasn't until around the War Against Piracy that she gained an opportunity for freedom. How she achieved this was: Tia Dalma/Calypso needed all the Pirate Lords of the Caribbean in the order to assemble the Brethren, so they could release her from her human form/bonds. She then resurrected
Calypso Tricking Hector to Freeing her
from her human body Tia Dalma
Hector Barbossa and then tricked him to retrieve the  Pirate Jack Sparrow from Davy Jones' Locker. Then from that a they summon a fourth meeting of the Brethren. OK... I know this might be a bit confessing but
stay with me and it will make since.. After the summons for the Fourth meeting of the pirates, it seemed to
backfire on Davy Jones and his crew. You see those Pirate Lords grew fearful, for when they convened, they only argued and fought among themselves, all afraid of what Calypso's anger, treachery and revenge might become on their own ships and crew.  So there is more my dears friends and followers I hope
Calypso In her true Form as
Her father was a giant Titian
you are Enjoying the the tale.. So while the Brethren of the Pirates were convened, Davy Jones had reunited with Calypso, who intended to be free and to punish the Brethren too, but she couldn't do so until Barbossa undid the spell that bound her to the mortal flesh where she realized Davy Jones' had did his
betrayal to her. So After the spell was said and Calypso was free, her wrath became horrible to behold as the enraged
Goddess gathered the waters of the oceans around her into a massive maelstrom where a great battle raged in the center of it. And it was in that very battle that Davy Jones ' heart was prieced and he died. With his death  - Davy Jones was welcomed back into the dark embrace of the sea - for Calypso in her own way still loved him...
'In the days of myth and legend, the beautiful Calypso, daughter of Atlas, ruled the wine-dark seas
and all sailors everywhere both loved and feared her."
-Unknown
As Calypso In this version You could say even in this Verizon she is still the strong womanliness and
unsurpassed in her grace as the Greek Calypso that she is is portraying. She was as changeable and
as whimsical as the sea itself. Using the sea creatures as her helpers and as her defenders.. If you think about the Calypso's powers were only eclipsed by the Great God of the Sea Poseidon God of
the SEAS and Zeus God among all the Gods of the Olympians could be the only one to command her
to stop.As with all Godly beings of great power Calypso had both within her - she was both a nurturer and a destroyer if you think about... Calypso was a very powerful Sea Nymph/Goddess of her time in the Greek gods/Goddess and Titian's... She had dominated over all seas and all the sailors both in the Greek times and as they portrayed her in the pirates of the Caribbean as Tia Dalma's
Body as Calypso. It seems as in the time of the Greek times the sailors love her and feared her, just as
in the version of  Tia Dalma as Calypso in the Pirates of the Caribbean. As the love affair with Davy Jones and Tia Dalma with the Calypso spirit capture or imprisoned inside the human body of the Gypsy woman. As she used the Ship called the Flying Dutchman to rescue the souls of the sea.
So even in the Pirate version of the Powerful Calypso she can  possessed a fiery and unpredictable
nature that reflects the fact that she is truely a Goddessess of the wild and unnameable seas and Oceans.
She also can be a very vengeful Goddesses, being extremely dangerous when angered by summoning a devastating storms after discovering that her lover Davy Jones had told the Brethren how to
trap her spirit into a human form. This is why the form Tia Dalm was transformed back to Calypso
and she grew to ten times her size like that of a titian Giant and then crashed through the deck of
the Black Pearl as a thousands of little crabs...
So there you have it  the strong, beautiful and powerful Calypso, I truly felt she was

a remarkable Greek Goddesses in her time and she still lives on even into the 21th century
which is a grand thing I think for the people of the Greek Islands for they
are the folks that had started alot of the firsts of oure world with
the Gods and Goddesses that we have today.. I know there
are others throughout the world - too, but I am most
fimilar with the Gods and Goddess of the Greeks... I hope that you Enjoyed
this post as much as I did. And I will probably will do more on the Greek Gods
and Goddesses because I just love the history and the country of Greece.
Love you all my dears friends and followers
Have a wonderful weekend
