The Pleiades Sisters

The Pleiades Sisters-
The Pleiades Sisters
In this post I am going to cover the Mythology of the
Pleiades sisters. In Greek Mythology the Pleiades Sisters were the
daughters of Pleione the Oceanid Sea-Nymph born on Mount Cyllene and Atlas the Titian that help up the world. They were also the companions of Artemis. They are the sisters of Calypos, Hyas, the Hyades and the Hesperides. The Pleiades sisters were Sea-Nymphs in the train of Artemis and together with the seven Hyades were called the Atlantides, Dodonides or  Nysiades, nursemaids and
teachers to the infant Bacchus.
There is some debate as to the origin of the sisters name Pleiades - It is said that it was
accepted that the name is derived from the name of their mother Pleione the Oceanid Sea Nymph
who was born on Mount Cyllene. However the name that their mother gave the sisters Pleiades seems
to be derived from πλεῖν which means to sail- which later became the important in the sisters sailing seasons in the Mediterranean Sea.
After Atlas their father the Titan Giant was forced to carry the heavens on his shoulder,

Orion began to pursue all of the Sister Pleiades for 7years. And got away when Zeus
granted their prayers and changed them into Doves and then into stars to comfort their father Atlas so he would know they would be safe from Orion. The constellation of Orion is said to still trying to pursue the
sisters across the night skies. It seems that one of the most memorable myths that
involved the Pleiades is how they literally became from Sea-Nymphs to Stars. Its called their Catasterism.
According to different versions of the legend/tale of the Pleiades sisters - all seven sister committed
suicide because they were so saddened by either the fate of their father, Atlas or of the loss of their siblings,
the Hyades. So in turn Zeus the ruler of the Greek gods, immortalized the sisters by placing them all into
the sky for all to see for all Eternity. After Centuries when the God Zeus immortalized  the seven

Pleiades sisters into the seven star cluster, it was known thereafter as the Pleiades to this day. You
can even see them in the modern skies of 2014... The was a Greek poet Hesiod who mention the

Pleiades in his poem~Greek Poet Hesiod
'And if longing seizes you for sailing the stormy seas,
when the Pleiades flee mighty Orion
and plunge into the misty deep
and all the gusty winds are raging,
then do not keep your ship on the wine-dark sea
but, as I bid you, remember to work the land.'
The Poet Lord Tennyson in his poem ~ Locksley Hall & Poet Lord Tennyson
'Many a night I saw the Pleiades, rising through the mellow shade,
Glitter like a swarm of fire-flies tangled in a silver braid.'
Although the loss of one of their sisters, Merope, in some myths many reflect an astronomical
event wherein one of the stars in the Pleiades star cluster disappeared from view by the naked eye.
The Pleiades-
 Their names were:
*Maia - 'Mother' Nurse'
*Alcyone - 'Queen who wards off Evil Storms'
*Electra - 'Amber' 'Shining' 'Bright'
*Celaino - 'Swarthy'
*Taygeta - 'Long-necked'
*Sterope or Asterope - 'Lightening' 'Twinkling 'Sun-Face'
*Merope - 'Eloquent' 'Mortal' 'Bee-Eater'

As I had meant before the Pleiades sisters were the daughters of Atlas and the Sea-Nymph Pleione and their

half sisters the Hyades whose mother was Aethra. The sisters were perhaps also half-sisters of the Hesperides who were the daughters of either Night alone Atlas or and Hesperis which is Evening.  Now both Pleione and Aethra were Oceanids, daughters of Oceanus and Tethys, the Titans who ruled the outer seas before being replaced by Poseidon. Atlas another Titan who led their war against the Gods and was afterward condemened by Zeus to hold up the heavens on his shoulders. Then the Pleiades were also

Sea-nymphs to in the train of Artemis, and together with the seven Hyades were called the Atlantides, Dodonides or Nysiades, nursemaids and teachers to the infant Bacchus.
The Hesperides (`nymphs of the west'), apparently not counted in this, were only three, and dwelled in an orchard of Hera's, from which Heracles fetched golden apples in his eleventh labor. The Sisters were part of the Greek Mythology and are still in modern day as you look up in the skies today you can see the Pleiades sisters.. I hope that you Enjoy this post
