Kirin - Japanese Unicorn
When I found the Kirin I was quite surprised on how much it is compared to our mythical Unicorn that I just covered a couple of days ago... It seems that contrary to the either soft white, deep black
and sometimes in the myth of the unicorn Red too as most people will recognize in the western
Mythology or legends, the Asian countries have their own form of unicorn of sorts you could say. These
Creatures have many different names in the Asian culture: [Ch'i Lin, Qilin, Quilin, & K'i Lin and there are
many other spelling and variations due to continuous differing translation into the Latin-based languages.
Yet it seems that the Asian culture as come to one name that has simplified all the other translations and
had make it their own Asian Unicorn. They call it the Kirin, and focus on the Japanese interpretation of the
creature. The Kirin Unicorn has quite a number of descriptions because of its many list of names, even thought it is mostly called the Kirin Japanese Unicorn.. Some of these are: It seems that the
Kirin can be described has having a dragon's head that is attached to the body of a deer, which is covered in beautiful dragons scales, and a tail of an ox. And of course he has the famous large horn in the middle of it forehead... So to me the Kirin truly does sound like the Asian Unicorn... although in some ways I prefer this one more. Its probably because I love dragons and yu all
know that by just looking at my blog hhehhe... There are other variations that they speak of with the
Kirin Creature. These depictions are a bit more evil of sorts meaning that the Kirin is covered in fire that
can burn away evil people or even a chimera mixed with a fish's scales. The Kirin body is that of a Tiger with
horse's legs and has a dragon's head and neck. [Note it not so much that the Kirin may seem more evil looking, its what he does with is power against evil that is what is important].
It seems too that with each new dynasty, Era or even country the Kirin will appear to be reborn to fit the
needs of the time that it is living in. Mostly frequently the Kirin was associated with the Japanese Emperors and the wise scholars of the times, so their depictions could alter in order to boast ferociousness or
otherworldly powers of those the Kirin would represent - like that of the Japanese Emperors...
The origins of the Kirins comes originally from China as many Japaneses things do.. where it was one of the
Four Divine Creatures that first arose into the world. Of the Four Divine Creatures the first arose into the
world they were the Kirin, Phoenix, Turtle and the Dragon.
Each of these Four divine creatures are associated with: a season - a element - a specific written character. In the myth, the Four Creatures Kirin, Phoenix, Turtle and the Dragon were created
by the first God before the world was made, and after the God had completed his task/ the Four
Magick creatures disappeared into the dark, mysterious places into the world that he he created.
The Dragon swam into the ocean depths, the Tortoise went to the marshy swamp land, the
Phoenix went into the sky and the Kirin disappeared into the depths of the forest...
After it was set upon the earth, the Kirin was said to have great magick powers that allowed him to
determine the purity of a person human. It was also known to be a peaceful creature that would bring
good luck and prosperity to those that ever would be so luck to encounter the rare creature.
Since it had this acute ability to determine if a human was wicked or had succumbed to vice, the pure and
kind hearted Kirin was seen as a symbol of justice that would punish those who strayed away from the path
of good and had strayed away to the path of evil you could say.. There are some myths that even speak of
a Kirins ability to breathe fire just like his divine brother the dragon. This fire breathing power that would only burn the evil people that it touched. It was also noted as being so peaceful and benevolent that it would
not even harm the blades of grass it stepped on, and so would walk silently over the valleys and fields of grass never even bending a single blade of grass.
These Divine Creatures were also very elusive creatures, that would only appear to people that would grow
to have amazing purpose and power. If an emperor were to see one, It would signify that he was ruling justly
and fairly. It was also said that the most righteous rulers would often see the Kirin grazing in their palace meadows. The Kirin did not just show itself to those of royalty it would also appeared on the day
Confucius was born and presented his parents with a message telling them their son would grow to be
a 'man of extraordinary good moral and talent.'
It is said that the earliest appearace of an Kirin was in the 5th century BC. Some have said it was even earlier as early as 122 BC. I have noticed that some have the horn and others don't it just depends.. The Kirin are also said to be a symbo of fertility and often will bring children to a family...
I found this Magick Creature to be quite wonderful and
