The Legend of The Fragrant Lady-A Guam Legend

The Lady In White

A long, long time ago, after the Spanish occupation on the island of Guam, there was a mysterious woman who roamed the island. She was known for walking down from her home in the mountains to bathe in a swimming pool at nearby Nimitz Beach.

Every night, when the moon lit the skies, the woman would walk to the beach. Enroute, she would pass the home where a particular family lived. Each time she did this the family would smell a sweet, lemon-like scent. They always wondered about the mysterious source of the sweet scent.

One night, the father of the household decided to hide in the nearby jungle and wait for the mysterious source of the sweet scent. He was so sleepy and struggled to stay awake. Suddenly, he heard the rustling of leaves and looked toward them. There, he saw a woman dressed in a white, flowing gown. He followed carefully, making sure not be noticed.

The woman walked gracefully into the water and bathed in the moonlit night. The father hid in the jungle and waited for her return. When she finally returned, he began to follow her again. As he struggled to keep up with her, she suddenly vanished into the shadows of the trees and was never again seen.

To this day, families living near Nimitz Beach still speak of the sweet, lemon-like scent that goes passing their homes in the middle of a moonlit night.
