A Curious Box of Chalk-
By Wendy Yukihirio

Wanda is her name and she is a most wicked enchantress. She loves to trick children with
her special box of chalk. With a skinny purple hand, she set the box by a narrow path  near a
park. Then she was gone.
Five and a half year old Kai and his buddy Blue Monkey were exploring by the bushes
that hid the path.
“Look what I found,” said Kai looking at the box. It had funny carved markings and
looked very old. He picked it up. “I wonder what’s inside.”
“Oh…,” said Blue Monkey rubbing his nose, “I think I do not know.”
            “Aren’t you curious?”
Blue Monkey shrugged and looked at the box. He felt uneasy. He had a terrible feeling
they should not open it.
Kai opened the box. The chalk inside sparkled. Each pieced of chalk had a clown
carved into it.
            “Wow. Look at this!”
“Let’s put the box back. This may be a bad thing,” said Blue Monkey.
“Don’t be silly! Just think of what we can draw.”
Kai carefully pulled out one of the pieces of chalk. It felt very heavy and he
almost dropped it.
“Maybe I’ll draw a castle,” he said.
He started with a long line for the bottom of a castle. His hand felt strange. It was
as if someone was moving it for him. Walls and towers appeared. His hand was moving
faster now. It was almost a blur as his hand quickly filled in amazing detail.
He could not believe what he was seeing. He knew he could not draw this well.
“Let’s go Kai,” said Blue Monkey. “It’s foggy. I can hardly see.”
“Take your paws off your face and you’ll see better,” said Kai standing up. “But
you’re right, it is foggy. Let’s go.”
He put the box of chalk into his pocket and took one more look at his drawing. “I
still don’t know how I did it Blue Monkey.”
The path was hard to see, but the fog seemed to be moving. They could see parts
of it clearing and even streaks of sunlight. In one of the clearings there appeared an
enormous castle.
“Look!” shouted Kai. “There is my castle! It’s real!”
They raced to the massive old weathered door in front of the castle. The sun was
was and Blue Monkey almost forgot his fears.
Kai touched the door handle. His hand slipped through it as if it was not there at
all. Thinking fast, Kai turned and grabbed Blue Monkey’s paw. Both fell hard and rolled
over on a cold hard floor.
Inside, everything was quite unusual. Large paintings of clowns covered the walls.
The windows were many shapes of harlequins. There appeared to be no other way into the
room except for the door they just fell through. Then, looking at the ceiling, they were
surprised to see it covered by hundreds of little doors. Each door had a picture of  a clown
on it.
“Aaagh!” bellowed Blue Monkey pointing at the strange black ivy crawling all over the
room. “The black ivy is moving Kai. See! That piece is coming towards us!”
Kai looked. It did seem to wiggle a little bit. “It must be a breeze,” he said,
Blue Monkey threw his paws in the air. “What breeze? There is no breeze!”
They stared at each other not knowing what else to say or do.
A thumping noise came from the ceiling getting louder and louder. They looked
up. Hundreds of doors flashed open crashing like hammers against the ceiling. Thousands
of balloons floated down. Each had a face of a smiling clown on it.
Blue Monkey shook his head. He did not like the black ivy, but all the colorful
Balloons were beautiful as they floated down.
Strange music was coming from somewhere. It sounded like an announcement.
Hundreds of little clowns came swinging down on long ropes from the ceiling. Several
called to Kai and Blue Monkey. “Come play with us!”
They each grabbed a rope and began swinging, bouncing the balloons off their feet.
“Look a me, I’m flying,” said Kai. “Wheeeeeee!”
They were laughing and giggling flying from wall to wall with their new friends.
No one seemed to notice the fast growing, black ivy snaking everywhere. It had
already covered all the walls and was inching up the ceiling. The balloons covered most of
the twisting ivy on the floor.
After a while, a few of the ropes stopped moving as strong tentacles clutched onto them
and held them onto the floor.
Kai and Blue Monkey were now chasing each other in a game of tag. Blue Monkey was
Just about to catch Kai when both heard the shrieks of the clowns in their tiny voices.
“THE IVY! THE IVY! IT’S COMING AGAIN!”
In horror, the clowns quickly scooted up the ropes to the ceiling.
            “Climb with us! They shouted.
Kai and Blue Monkey climbed up the ropes as fast as they could, but soon began to tire.
“Help us!” cried Blue Monkey. “You’re too big for us!” they squealed.
The doors in the ceiling started to slam shut as cut ropes fell among the balloons and
Twisting black ivy.
“Go,” said Kai to his small friends. “We can make it.”
The clowns turned and reluctantly scampered up the ropes. One shouted back,
“Keep trying. We’ll think of something.”
Except for the two above, Kai and Blue Monkey, all of the hundreds of doors had
slammed shut.
“I think this is a bad place,” said Blue Monkey.
“Keep climbing,” said Kai. “We’ll make it.”
Both were climbing more slowly now. The ivy was starting up their ropes.
“This is a bad place,” said Blue Monkey.
            Kai glared at him.
“This is a very bad place,” said Blue Monkey.
“Will you stop saying that!” yelled Kai. “Keep climbing!”
The black ivy was gaining on them, slowly twisting up the rope.
Blue Monkey felt some drops of water on his face. Kai noticed it too.
“I think it is starting to rain on us Kai. The rain is coming through the doors. How
can that be?”
Kai shrugged. “I don’t know, but I think it is helping us. Look! The drops are
Making holes in the ivy.”
The rain was heavier now making their eyes blink. They could barely see the tiny clowns
Smiling and waving at them. Everything began to fade.
Moments later Kai and Blue Monkey were back in the park standing in the rain.
The drawing of the castle on the sidewalk was washing away.
Kai took the box out of his pocket. “We need to destroy this chalk Blue Monkey.”
            “But how?”
            “Put it in a puddle.”
“Will that work?”
“I hope so.”
“There’s a big puddle over there, said Blue Monkey.
Kai heard his mother’s voice. “Kai. Kai. Where are you?”
He quickly threw the box of chalk into the deep puddle with a big splash. “I’m coming,”
he shouted.
Later that day the sun came out and the puddle was gone. A little girl was playing by the
path and bent over to pick up something.
“Hey mommy, look what I found,” said the little girl.
In her hand was an old box with funny markings on it.
