One of the first Greeting Christmas Cards 1870 Victorian |
Some have said these were the very first commercial Christmas & New Years Cards. There more my Friends! It is believed that these were designed and printed in London, England in the year 1843. The man who did these was prints was John Horsley, a British narrative painter and Royal Academician too. It seems that John Horsley had designed these very first Christmas cards in England between 1843-1903 the day of his death. I also discovered that these first Christmas cards were produced at the request of his friend - Sir Henry Cole.
Sir Henry Cole had suggested to his friend, John the idea of a special design to be sent to all of their friend at Christmas. So in the year 1843 there was a special edition (Christmas Card) made of 1,000 cards. These cards were printed and placed for sale in London to see what would happen? Well it seems at the time it worked very well. All those 1,000 cards that went on sale back in 1843 must have been a hit, because it seems that just one of those first cards that were sent in the late 1800's are
This is a copy of what those 1,000 cards that were sent to friend back in 1843 And that 1 of 18 that are still in exist 167-years was sold for 7,000$ pretty good for and old Christmas Xmas Card Eh! |
1- The fact that after 167years out of 1,000 cards there are still 18 still in exist with our computer age.
2-The second is or fact - I found that though there was much excitement with the making and sending of the first Christmas cards, it wasn't an instant success. It even brought disapproval from the temperance League who feared the new Cards! would encourage Drunkenness!
It doesn't stop there! It seems that the following year - 1844 there were other picture makers and the Christmas Card was launched on the tide of Popular favor. However, it wasn't until the idea had grown out of favor among artist and literary circles that it was taken up by a
Business 'man' by the name of Goodall.
This Business man Goodall and his company - Charles Goodall & Son was an highly known British publishing company in London at the time. Goodall and his company was one of the first to mass produce Christmas Cards to be sent World wide.
Then in 1866 is when Mr. Josiah Goodall commissioned Marcus & Company for an Lithograph for his company. This is what set in motion the many designers and the following years after that in Goodall company as the forerunners of today's Christmas Cards of TODAY!
