~Mastering The Melon~
In this post you will learn about the tasty Fruity Melon
and how to make
the cold winter into a spring MELON DAY!
First you have to know about all the
different kinds of Melons there are,
then I'll tell you how to choose a good one; about seedless melons;
and finally three ways too cut an melon..
Top Picks or Prime melon season is July through September.
However, there is always I found melons at your local grocery store.
You just have to look
a little harder; they might not be as prime choose,
but at least you can have a bit of Melon Summer
in the cold of winter Eh!
In the Watermelon Family~
1-Crimson Sweet: These Watermelons have a crisp, sweet and mild
taste, with a medium red flesh.
2-Mickey Lee: These Watermelons are a very Red flesh with an clean
taste and has a slight grainy texture to them.
3-Moon and Stars: These Watermelons have a very bright to pinkish-
red flesh with a sweet-tart flavor.
4-New Orchid: These Watermelons have an Pale orange flesh and have
a rich honey like flavor.
5-Yellow Doll- These Watermelons have an yellow flesh and are slightly
tart too, like that of the Moon and Star Watermelon. However, these Melons
also have an Musk flavor & are late in the Harvest Melon Family.
6-Ambrosia-These Watermelons are quite sweet, with an floral taste also
have deep rich many flavor with an orange flesh. Good one!
7-Canary- Watermelon is an ver dense green flesh with a sweet flavor that's
kinda musky in a good way like grapes.
8-Charentais -These Melons are an deep orange in color and very juicy,
with a flowery aroma to them.
9-EEL River- Melons are Supersoft in texture, also a very gentle flavor
not strong at all! They are said to be an Elegant melon with an sweet
perfume of flavor and a orange flesh.
10-Ha-Ogen- These Melons are chin-dripping and very juicy.
They are also slightly savory with an tropical flavor/ with a pale green flesh.
11-HoneyLoupe-An Hybrid of melon that tastes and looks like
a cross between a cantaloupe and a honeydew melon. These
are bright orange very sweet to ear and juicy.
12-Galia-These Melons are very sweet and juicy / also succulent as a
summer peach with a soft green flesh.
13-Green Nutmeg- These Melons are quite small or tiny you could say..
They serving melons are a bit spicy with bright green flesh.
14-Tuscan- Finally the last Watermelon the Tuscan these Melons
are said to be a bit earthy yet have a clean flavor with hints of
cucumber - and rich amber color as their flesh...
~How to choose a Good Melon~
1-Give it the once overlook First-symmetrical? Check!
No bruises? Check! No Soggy areas? Check!
2-Find the Couche(Coosh) what this means?
That's the flat spot where the melon rested on the ground.
If it doesnt' have one, it was harvested too early!
3-Locate the 'Full Slip" or Belly Button, where the melon
attached to the vine. It should be smooth and clean, a sign it was
ripe enough to detach on its own.
4-Lift it! Does it some how seem heavier than it looks?
Good! that means its an Good Melon and Juicy!
~Seedless Melons YES or NO?~
No-Mother Nature has it right -Seeds studded Melons are much
juicier and more flavorful. Plus you can plant your heirloom
seeds to keep the variety alive-just one type to prevent cross pollination.
Note: For you all that can't grow gardens with the large Melons
I would say that is the exception to the rule.
~If Your Melon Smells~
So if your melon doesn't smell strong and fruity - hint
Let it sit a day or two to ripen before you cut into it.
The exception is Watermelons it doesn't ripen after picking it.
~Three-Ways to Cut a Melon~
Always wash the outside of the melons before cutting
1-Cut down through the middle, then put halves, flat sides
down on a work surface and slice them. Halve the slices that you
have just cut and make wedges or cubes into them.
2-Trim Ends, Stand the Melon up, on one of its Ends.
Cut off all the rinds off the melon, following the curve of the fruit. After
you have done this - cut you melon into either slices /and or cubes.
3-Place melon on its side, then use a mallet to tap the bade of
a large knife into the middle of the fruit until it starts to crack.
Cut the melon into whatever shapes you would like. This method
is especially useful for the large to X-large melons.
~Finally-Melon Ice Cubes~
Summer Frizzes
Puree any ripe melon in a blender
Then strain puree' to get about 2-cups of juice.
Pour juice into clean ice cube trays.
Freezes until set-about 2hours.
Divide the frozen cubes among 4glasses and pour
club soda over them. Serves 4..
If you want to add your Favorite Alcohol
You might add Vodka, Tequila or Any other Favorites of yours.
