In Chinese mythology, a Nian is a beast that lives under the sea or in the mountains. I thought a
Mythology Creature of China would be fun to do.. As my quest to try to find many different Magical &
Mythical Creatures all over the world for you! It seems that the Nian is a Mythical Beast of China
who from legend was from many many centuries ago. The legendary monster as they call him the NIAN.
Is said to always destroy the hard grown crops and fields that the villages worked all year to grow for
their families and for the village to eat so know one would go hungry, but it seems that this monster the
Nian would destroy all their hard work and their food for the year.. It was said that the
villages would try everything to get rid of the monster so their crops wouldn't be destroyed
every year.. They had tried everything to scare the Nian monster, but nothing seem to work. Finally,
the people of the villagers found a weakness of the Nian. After many years of searching and many lost crops
the villagers found the secret to keeping the Nian monster away for good. The monster was scared of the
colour RED! So indeed the colour red had worked. According to the Chinese legend and the folklore of the
Nian Beast stomping thru the crops & valleys of the people of china, then heading to their homes
Nian Mythical Beast its origins come from the Chinese New Year with the fight against the Nian many
centuries ago in China and the Chinese inserted an extra month once every few years [seven years out of a
19-yearcycle] in order to reconnect with the solar calendar, which is very similar to the concept of a leap year. It seems that the Nian would come on the first day of every New Years Day to eat the villages livestock, crops and even the villagers themselves, especially the children. So what they did to
protect themselves, the people of the small villages would put food in front of their doors at the beinginning of
evry new year in hopes it would not eat anything else. Long ago it was said the Nian was scared away
by a child that was wearing a red dress which lead the villagers to understand the beast weakness, the
colour Red. So the next day the whole village began to to first paint their entree village bright red doors, walls, ceils, etc. Then they hang red lanters and red spring scrolls in their door and windows. It is said that
Nian Mythical Beast
Red in chinese means the emblem of joy, virtue, truth and sincertiy. The people of the villiage would also use
Firecracker to frighten away the Nian which seem to work with all the Red colour in the town too.
This did work for many years until the Nian was eventually captured by the Hongjun Laozu, an ancient
Taoist Monk and it became locked inside the Hongjun Laozu's mountains. But the story doesnt end just
yet...After
Nian was captured, everyone had a big celebration and the ritual
involved in banishing him was repeated the following year, and so the
ritual was passed down from generation to generation and the custom of
celebrating New Year with firecrackers, noise, and the colour red has
persisted to this day. Its seems that the tale originated in the and it lays claims to a legacy as being one to the greatest of china's Monstrous beasts and behemoths of their mythology even to modern times.. But these dreadful brutes themselves lived in terror of a creature infinitely more awful and malevolent than all the rest of them combined. An immensely large beast reputedly endowed with a jaw vast enough to seize and devour a multitude of people in a single swallow, the Nian was a terror to behold indeed, with its massive horns, enormous tail, and an unnatural appearance that combined the powerful frame of a bull with the snarling head of a lion.
Nian Mythical Beast of China
The potential of this abomination to devastate humanity was not lost on the luminaries of Heaven, and so the Jade Emperor in his great wisdom, compelled the Nian to confine itself to its dreary mountain home most of the time. But a loophole did exist in this otherwise inspired decree, one that the Nian exploited with terrible consequences for mortal kind. On the first and fifteenth day of every year, as winter begun to recede to make way for the first signs of the new spring, the Nian was permitted to roam as it pleased, blighting every living thing that had the misfortune to stray into its destructive path.
Falling with great gusto upon the wretched villages, he would depopulate them in their entirety, leaving behind terrible lessons for other villages foolish enough to doubt the sagacity of fleeing before the Nian's onset the moment its movements were known.
But the gods were not unkind and it so happened that one of them felt motivated to check the menace of the Nian for once and all.. What I did find that there were many other versions to the ending to the folktale
and how they rid the Nian beast from the small villiage province of Shanghai. It seemed that there was
an Old mendicant that was part of the tale in trying to stop the beast and a few others too.
In todays modern China the celebration of every coming spring by setting off fire-crackers is still very much
alive in their culture today. This could be by playing loud instruments and adorning the lanterns outside their
homes with strips of Red! confident that the Nian will be cowed by their show of force and so leave them
untroubled for yet another year. Once the night is over, the people of China would then all come out to
congregate together with their relations and relatives to congratulate one another on surviving the Nian.
Well I hope that you all Enjoyed my new post on the Nian Beast of China
