The Leshy-2013

The Leshy

An Male Woodland Spirit of Slavic Mythology - Lesovik~
The Leshy is a male wood land spirit in the Slavic Mythology who protects wild animals, birds and the forest. They say that mass migration will happen of the animals, and birds of the forest is to be instruction of an Leshy, in order to keep them from harms way from predators.
The Leshy will protect all wild animals and the forest itself. Often it will lead humans astray to its cave in the deepest parts of the forest where it can make the humans sick and even in some stories to tickle them to death. These odd  magical creatures are known to have a mischievous behaviour and often takes the form of a peasant. Although they can be spotted because of their glowing reddish eyes. In their normal state it has a beard made of living grass and vines. He is often depicted with a tail, hooves and horns. They also have the ability to shrink themselves down to the size to a blade of grass or to the height of the tallest trees in the forest.
The life Style of a Leshy~
Some of the Leshy's  traits are; they have horrible cries that they can make, to scare humans in their
forest that they protect. They also can imitate voices of people who are familiar to the people who wander around his forest and then lure them back to their caves, where Leshy's will tickle them to death. Kinda strange creature wouldn't you say? They say that these Mythology creatures aren't evil although they do enjoy misguiding humans and kidnapping young women. I don't know what they do with the young women? I didn't find that part out. So you can use your imagination on that.. Creepy I would guess! These woodland spirits also are known to keep grazing cattle from wandering too far into the forest and from getting lost too. I found out that if more than one Leshy inhabits a forest, they will fight territorial rights for that entire forest. The evidence of this would be huge fallen tree's scattered about the forest and large amounts of wild animals acting strange.
The Traits of the Leshy~
It is said that the Leshy has the ability to shape-shift into any form, animal or plant. When he's in the human form, the Leshy has many different looks of the Slavic Lesovik. I have described one version earlier. He has been seen as a peasant form, with glowing green eyes and his shoes are on backwards and in other tales he appears to visitors as a large talking mushroom. It just depends on the Leshy mood.
If a person befriends a Leshy, the latter will teach them the secret of their magic. Farmers and shepherds would make pacts with the Leshy to protect their crops and sheep. The Leshy has many tricks including leading peasants astray by making them sick or tickling them to death. They are also known the hide the axes of woodcutters too, so that they cannot cut down his forest. Also if a Leshy crosses the path of a person in the woods, the person will get lost immediately to find the way out, you have to turn your clothes inside our and wear shoes on your opposite feet.
I found this Oh, magical creature fascinating. It was quite different than your average mythology creature.
The Lyeshy by W.R.S. Ralston. ru.
When the Lyeshy goes round to inspect his domains,
the forest roars around him and the trees shake.
By night he sleeps in some hut in the depths of the
woods, and if by chance he finds that a belated traveler
or sportsman has taken up his quarters in the refuge he had
intended for himself, he strives hard to turn out the intruder,
sweeping over the hut in the form of a whirlwind which makes
the door rattle and the roof heave, while all around the trees bend
and a terrible howling goes through the forest. If, in spite of all these
hints, the uninvited guest will not retire, he runs the risk of being lost
next day in the woods, or swallowed up in the swamp.

I hope that you find it interesting too. I found a few images from great Artist's that have depicted this creature what it might look like. I hope you find these as helpful as I did... Wendy

The Griffin-

The Griffin-
In my next post I am going to explore the Magick creature the Griffin. In legend of the Griffin, it has been depicted many different
ways. In this post, I will be going deeper into the legend/myth of this amazing Magick Creature.
First of all the Griffin is customarily depicted as a lion with eagle or raptor wings. They usually have talons although the Griffin have been known to simply have the lions paws too.
They have prominent upturned ears that seem to have developed from earlier Egyptian times, where it shows a crest on its head.
Its front part of the Griffin's body is frequently spotted like a leopard. Now, in the classical times, all four of the Griffin's feet were that of a lion, but in later times the two front legs were that of an lions and his two hind were eagles talons.
The griffin takes its name from the Greek word, Gyphos - Which means 'hooked or curved'. An allusion to its sharply curved beak.
It is said to be one of the oldest magical creatures, that is depicted in the western civilization and even remains that even today! As
a powerful protector of modern civil institutions such as banks, car plants and breweries too.
Griffens were a feature of Egyptian Art from 3000 BC, spreading into Syria, Anatolia and Cyprus.
In Sumerian Myth, the Griffin is the weather God Iskur where it is depicted vomiting forth streams of water or lighting from its mouth upon the parched lands below.
In Assyrian Art - The Griffin is frequently shown venerating and protecting the Tree of Life. Also the flanking divine figures to assist the check list of all evil.
Griffins were also shown with the Egyptian sun god, Malakbel and in the old Kingdom, where they were a symbol of the victorious rulers striding across the bodies of the enemies wounded or killed in battle.
In the 1700's B.C the Griffins were depicted by King Mino's Palace on the Island of Crete, where it is shown fighting with bulls and lions, as well al lining the walls of his throne rooms.
The Greeks would also adorn the Griffins to many of their vases, mosaics, lyres, gems, seals, coins and reliefs but they primarily would have the Griffins craved upon their tombs to guard the dead and to act as bearers of the soul.
It is said that the Griffin became associated with many of the Greek divinities, some of these divinities were - Nemesis the Goddess of Justice, who's chariot was drawn by Griffins. Even in
medieval legends, like that of Alexander the Great in the 4th century B.C. attempted to fly on a griffin to the edge of the horizon. Even this great leader of his time couldn't tame the Magical Beast.
But Even the Great Alexander the Great couldn't control these
Powerful Creatures. As it says on his tomb... Alexander the Great.

'O, mankind, who will die,
why do you desire to be lifted on high?
why, the more you gain,
the more do your desire to possess?
Everything passes away.
And the flower of life also comes to and end.
The higher you climb,
The greater your fall from the height,
to the depth.'

There was a lot on this Magick Creature the Griffin, even I found
that Apollo God of the Sun use them to pull his chariot across the heavens, in my Apollo post. The list was much longer too! I hope that I have given  you all an Full-circle of the Griffin my dear Friends & Followers.

OLWEN Celtic Goddess of Flowers and Springtime

OLWEN GODDESS of FLOWERS and SPRINGTIME-
I thought I would take you all back the the Celtic times of the Great Goddesses
Olwen Celtic Goddess of
Flowers and Springtime
I love the time.. There were such good times it seems full of life and Happiness
although I know that with everything there is good there is trouble times too.
But it always seemed that in the times of the Goddesses of Earth it was a much happier
time than what is happening on our Earth today. So my dearest Friends and Follower
That is why I try to bring you all to happy times in history, whether it be the times
of the Dragons, Fairies, Magical Creatures or the Grand Gods and Goddesses
I hope that I can make a happy place for you all to come to, when your day at what
ever you may do. Where ever you may live all over the world that we can come together
here as one happy people in my magical land..
So today I am going to discover with you all the Celtic Goddess Olwen of Flowers & Spring.
She also symbolizes love and re-birth. As I went to research the Goddess Olwen of Flowers
Goddess Persephone in Spring
Hades Taking Persephone
and Springtime I can't stop and thing how much she in some ways reminds me of the Goddess Persephone
from the grown where she was just picking flowing for springs... And of course you all known the rest
of the story if note I have posted this Goddesses tale too. All you have to do is just look on my labels on the right side of my blog at the bottom side..
Olwen the Celtic Goddess of Flowers and Springtime. I found in here photos that she was either shown as a happy goddess with flowers all around her or in a red Celtic gown very beautiful but she seemed sad.. Her story goes.. That she is a Welsh Goddess of the Spring and Sunlight. She is depicted as a beautiful woman with very pale skin with yellow

blonde hair in most cases. It usually is shown flowing behind her as she moves about. But there are also painting showing here with her beauty showing her with her
standing and looking quite sad. I couldn't tell you what they were trying to depite her thinking in those type of paintings.. Her name means white path and it is believed that she leaves a trail of white clover or trefoils as she passes in the awakening meadows of spring. Olwen's Magick causes all the flowers and trees to bloom as she walks by them.  Even thought she is mostly painted in the red dress she is also called the White Lady of the Day! I found this kinda odd being that I couldn't find any images of Olwen in a white
This show the story Olwen a daughter
of the Giants
dress, but that isn't the most important part of the post. In Welsh Legend, OLWEN was a Beautiful Maiden, the lover of CULHWCH and the daugther of the Giant, "YSPADDADEN'. Her father is fated to die if she ever marries, so when 'CULHWCH' comes to court her he insisted that 'CULHWCH' complete several seemingly impossible tasks before he world allow them to marry, and with the help of his cousin, ' King Arthur CULHWCH', succeeds and the Giant dies, allowing 'Olwen to marry her Suitor. The storey of Olwyn The
Welsh Goddess, a daughter of the King of the Giants, called Ysbadadden, who named her Olwyn which meant 'the golden wheel'. Kinda makes some see her as an opposing force to the Goddess Arianrhod of the Moon 'The silver Wheel', but not really in my own opinion. I found that Olwen the Welsh Goddess had a nickname and that was "Lady of the White Tracks'. Why she got this nickname is because of wherever she had walked the trefoil plants commonly were called shamrocks that would pop-up. This would indicate that she may have been a Triple Goddess unto
Olwen as Welsh Goddess in fairyland
on her horse for 1year and day before her
father came to her rescue but she still had a
link to the faery kingdom
Olwen In Fairyland
herself with several other association long her that have been long lost
over the decades. The hero of her tale was Culhwch the suitor of Olwen who went on a mythical journey to find her after her father, who knew he would die if their marriage took place, hid her. In this part of the myth she is the May Queen, a partner to the new sacrificial God who takes the  place of the old one. Olwen also had many adventures in fairyland after she was captured by hores riding with the faeries. She was rescued by her father after a year and a day of captivity. She is still May Queens and is often still linked to the faery kingdom.

I hope you all Enjoyed my post on-
Olwen the Welsh Celtic Goddess of flowers and Springtime
Yet as you read on there was a lot more to this goddess
and with that I hope this was a good read
I love you all my dear Friends and Followers always!

Spriggans-

Spriggans~
Spriggans in his tiny Form
Good afternoon my dear Friends and Followers I found a new type of Magical Critter for you all! It's the Spriggans! I have been looking for new and interesting new faeries, elves, dragons, and magical critters for you all my dears for the new year of 2015. I have found so new folktales too. That I will be doing soon. So now for the Magical Critters Spriggans, it seems that they can be quite small, but have the ability to inflate themselves into monstrous size when needed. This has led humans to believe that the are the ghosts of dead giants, that haunt the old ruins and catacombs in which their treasure is. They can be quite ugly and grotesques in shape and size when guarding their home and treasure. Spriggans are a group of magical critters that are very skilled in stealing, infamous in being villains and most often very dangerous. They have been blamed for the mysterious destruction of buildings, cattle, blighting crops and all kinds of unpleasant mischief. The Spriggans are said to be legendary creatures from the Cornish Faery Lore. These Faery Spriggans were said to be very grotesque, ugly and were found living in the old ruins mostly of Ireland. Faery bodyguards. As I had said before they are usually very small but since they are faery's the have the ability to swell up to enormous  size which frightens the average human who things the are ghosts of ancient giants. Some have even been as evil as to steal away mortal children and replace them with one of their own ugly changelings.
Spriggan in a tree stub where
they guard their Treasure
They would burrow into old tree stubs guarding their buried treasure and generally acted as
They are, also know for sending strong storms to blight crops of the humans. There was a story and it was said it was of an old woman who got the better of an band of these Spriggans by turning her clothing inside-out to gain their treasure. How did she do it?Well, it seems that by turning your clothes inside-out is just as effective as iron your clothes with Holy Water. It seems to repel the faeries very well! As far as their appearance they are described as short little men with very large feet, skinny body's, wise-looking features and a crooked body. They are often dressed, with pieces of stones. Since the Faery Spriggan don't have much of a chance in life, the adults are notorious child snatchers and if the have the chance, they will find a human parent-child to replaced with an unhealthy changeling baby.
Spriggans Dressed in Rocks
This seems to happen quite often in folklore in Cornish Ireland. So they would watch the newborns very carefully. These Creature Faery's will also cause illness, bad weather and intentionally lead humans into danger too. Now for a bit of history on the Spriggan's. The name was given to the family of faeries in Cornish Folklore and they are vey closely related to the Piskies. However, they are generally a bit darker and a lot more dangerous than their mischievous cousins - Piskies & Faeries. The differences are generally, whereas the Faeries & Piskies are described as being cheerful and fun loving. Spriggans are more spiteful, dark, very dangerous & full of malice. Also, they have a deep hatred toward humans. One fact, that I did find out as a common trait & their hatred, toward humans was how they
would lead lonely human traveler into either swamps or near dangerous
crumbling cliffs where they would lead them to their doom.
The other was to frighten humans by expanding their small body's

Into Giants proportions -
so that the mortal thought they were Giants.

I HOPE THAT YOU ENJOY THE POST
ON THE FAERY/CREATURE SPRIGGANS
THEY ARE A BIT DARK BUT INTERESTING!
I LOVE YOU ALL VERY MUCH MY DEAR

Japanese Dragon Ryu

Japanese Dragon Ryu-
In this post I will be covering the Japaneses Dragons and how they are similar in ways to that
Japanese Dragon Ryu
of the Chinese Dragons, but are more serpentine in shape plus they have only the three
claws on each foot rather that the 4 to 5 claw foot. These Dragons are said to fly less frequently but I will
read-up on that to see if that is true for all the Japanese dragons. I did discover that the reason the Japanese
Dragons only have the three toes/claws is because of the Japanese believe Eastern dragon originated in their
native homeland. The people of Japan believed that, when the dragons began to leave the homeland,
they gained toes. The further the dragons went from their home Japan, the more toes they gained. Which
would explained why the Chinese and Korean Dragons have more toes. And that is another tale to be told another day. The Mythological history of the Asian dragon traces back its roots back to India before the
birth of historical Buddhism in the year 500BC, and has its foundation in a belief in Naga, meaning human- like creatures who wore crowns or serpents on their heads. How the Ryu Dragon however, was said to be
imported into japan from china together with Buddha around the mid-6 century AD. Most Japanese Zen
temples have the Ryu Dragon painted on their ceilings or their assembly halls since it the Ryu Dragon is a
protector of the Buddhist law. The Japanese Ryu Dragon is a creature of harboring - many different aspects
coming together as one within the imagery of the Irezumi. The Ryu dragons are associated with the Japanese Buddhism, but the dragon is also able to control storms and rains, and this ability makes the Ryu dragon a symbol of fertility as well, since there can be no good rice harvest without the proper amount of rain.
The Ryu Dragon also has the ability to shape-shift as well and is well known when one delves deeper into the
Japanese Dragon Ryu
mythology surrounding. The Ryu is quite handy with his magical proprieties too. It is also said that the Ryu Dragon had associated with many of Buddhas thru the ancient times and with well known historical figures in
the Japanese Culture... One of these famous Cultures is called ' Dragon rising to the heavens'. Basically the story or tale goes Ryu sho ten ' A dragon rises out of smoke near Mt. Fuji, ascending toward the sky.'
I have also found that the Japanese dragons are diverse legendary creatures in the Japanese mythology and folklore. Some of these myths were that of the amalgamate native legends with imported stories about dragons from china, korea and india. Like these other Asian dragons , most Japanese dragons are water deities  that are associated with rainfall and large bodies of water and are typically depicted as large, wingless, serpentine creatures with clawed feet.
It is said the most famous of all the Japanese dragons is the Tatsu or Ryu which is a descendant of a primitive three -toed variety of Chinese dragon. This Japanese dragons are traditionally associated more with the sea than the rain. This is because Japan is less vulnerable to drought-related disasters as compared to China. Therefore they didn't feel the same need to pray to rain - releasing dragons.
Japanese Dragon Ryu
I also found out that the Ryu Dragon was
originated from Buddhist religion and is one of the four divine beasts from Japanese mythology. The other three beings were the Phoenix, Turtle and the Kirin. If you didn't know the Kirin was its the Japanese Unicorn - and If you are interested in learning more about this amazing creature I have actually written a post on this beautiful Creature... Just have a look on my labels under Japanese Kirin.. Anyway back to the post. It seems that that these for divine Creatures of Japan are frequently the emblem of the Emperor of the ancient Japanese times.  The Dragon Ryu is said to Rule the water of Japan. And there is tale about the dragon Ryu or Ryu-jin,  the most well known dragon in Japanese legend. It kinda goes like this; the Ryu Dragon is summons a storm by howls and then transforms into a huge tornado. I found that the Ryu Dragon is very popular in japan because it is an bringer of fortune and wealth and can be used as a good luck charm if one chooses to do so. I found that many people now in modern times have used the Ryu Dragon as a good luck,
fortune and wealth in the form as tattoo's.
DRAGIN KINGS- were the Ryu Dragons of Japan... These dragon deities were teachers of Buddha and the propagating his teaching. They would honor the Buddha texts, as they lived in the water and had the
power to control the rain. I found is some of the stories of the Ryu dragon they would demand the Buddhist
treasures, especially the relics in exchange for quelling thunderstorms. In their kingdoms beneath the sea they guard treasures, such as jewels, and the Buddhist texts. When an termed is up for an Dragon Kings Ryu, they may appear independently in paintings or they many be shown in groups or as attendants to the Buddhist deities. The link below will show you even more on the legends & Mythology of the Japanese Dragons. I hope that you all Enjoyed the Ryu Dragon of Japan..

The Slavic Rusalka Fariy

Slavic Rusalka Fairies
As I continue my discover in the mythology & magical creatures, I've decided to branch out to different cultures other than my own. In doing so I have found the most fascinating creature. Some I have already blogged for you. And I will continue to look further in my later blogs. For this one I will be looking into the Russian folklore of the...
Slavic Rusalka ~
The Rusalka is a female mermaid, ghost, fairy, water nymph, succubus and a demon that dwells in waterways. According to most of the Slavic traditions, the Rusalka are usually a fish-woman who lives at the bottom of rivers, lakes and ponds. Then in the middle of the night the Rusalkas will walk out from the waterways on to the banks of the lakes etc. They will walk also the the meadows that are nearby the waterways and dance & sing the night away. If any of these Rusalka see a handsome young man or men around, they will lure them with their songs and dance. These Rusalka' fairies usually dance naked or with very loose flowing white or light colors long dresses which they are able to mesmerise the men very easily.
Once they had the men in their grasp, the Rusalka would lead the men back to their lake home's  to live with them forever. And the men would  never miss or know that they ever had a human family above the mucky waters of  the lake.
The Vila ~
The Vila are the Slavic version of the nymphs who have great power over storms which they take great delight in sending down on either a lone traveler or men at sea. They live in the meadows, near  trees to protect, ponds, rivers & oceans. They can also appear as swans, horses wolves and beautiful women and young girls.
They're also fairy - like spirits who live in the wilderness and sometimes in the clouds. They were believed to be the spirits of women or young girls who had been frivolous in their lifetimes and now float between here and the afterlife.
They to can appear as swans, snakes, horses, falcons, ravens, or wolves - that they shape-shift into  beautiful maidens that are either naked or dressed in white thin dresses with long flowing hair. The voices of the Vilas are quite beautiful and very luring to anyone who hears their songs - coming from their lovely voices. It is said if one does hear their voice they will lose all thought of food, drink or sleep for day on end. The Vilas beside being beautiful for their feminine charms, they are also fierce warriors too. When the earth shakes, it is the Vilas warriors doing battle against what ever magical beast that is trying to take their territories.
Another great power that the Vilas have is the power to heal and they have prophetic powers too! They willing to help humans (mostly handsome men) with their healing powers but its a very rare happening if it happens.
If you ever come across a deep thick grass area with a small or large ring - this is a fairy ring left where there was a dance. These should never be walked upon or walked over, as it will bring you bad luck. As I found out in my readings so walk with your own risk if you see one!
You might left a offering for the Vilas consisting of round cakes, ribbons, fresh fruit and small vegetables . They like flowers too, left at the sacred trees, wells and fairy caves.
Slavic Rusalka Female ghost ~
In the Slavie folklore of the Rusalka, this is where the female ghost or demon dwells in the lakes or waterways..
She could be considered a being of evil force. These ghostly figures that float about the dark gloomy lakes are the souls of young women who had died in the lake or near one.
The Rusalka is not invariably a malevolent but she will not be allowed to rest in peace until her death is avenged - This could be why these ghostly female spirit haunts these lakes. but according to legend most of these Rusalkas came to their deaths by a violent one so this is probably the reason why the haunting and sometimes turn into the darker more demon ghost within these lakes.
I hope you have enjoyed a bit of the different culture of Slavic Rusalka faerie... Wendy
