GOTOKONEKO CAT THE FIRE BUILDER

GOTOKONEKO CAT-THE TRIVET CAT-
The Gotokoneko Cat
Good afternoon my dear friends and followers and welcome to my humble blog of
legends of Japan... Today I am going to bring you to the tales of the
Gotokoneko Cat-The Fire Builder. I hope that you all find this tale interesting and fun.
The tale starts as they say in Japan: If you happen to wake up on a cold morning and see
a fire mysteriously roaring in what should be a clod fireplace, don't be afraid, It just means that
the Gotokoneko has been by, stoking up the hearth into a nice, satisfying roaring blaze. Just the kind this magical cat Enjoys. I do hope you also enjoy the wonderful Japanese traditional paintings too!
So, You are probably curious what is the Gotokoneko Cat Fire Builder. He is a type of Nekomata. The Gotokoneko who has a split-tail & has a advance age of all its kind. However, the difference from an average Nekomata is the Gotokoneko's love of fire. Most animals are Magical or otherwise are naturally terrified of fire. They enjoy the warmth of the fire, but fear the flames. The gotokoneko is not only not afraid of fire, but is often found stoking up the fire in a cold hearth, using a hifuki-dake - which is a bamboo blowing tube, to coax flames from the coals.
The gotokoneko is not the only cat-yokai associated with fire-the kasha is a flame-wrapped cat demon who drags corpses to hell. Kasha and some bakeneko are said to be able to transform into a hi-no-tama fireballs. Even the eyes of ordinary cats are said to be able to capture fire with them, sparking in the dark. But of all the various cat demons and magical cats only the Gotokoneko will actually sit down at a hearth and busy itself with the process of making a fire.
What is a Gotoko?
You might wondered? Well, In traditional Japanese homes, the Gotoko[trivets] were often found near
the sunken hearth. Hot utensils from the fire-like tea kettles or even pots and pans used for cooking were set on trivets so as not to char the tatami mats. As the name implies, the Gotokoneko were a trivet on his head like a hat.
History of the Gotokoneko-
So now the history of the Gotokoneko Cat. It was first known to appear in Tomi Mitsunobu's in the
Muromachi-period yokai collection. Hyakki Yagyo Emaki-百鬼夜行絵巻, which is Illustrated in Scroll of the Night Parade of a 100 Demons. There is no description of the Yokai, just a background figure of a cat marching in the Night Parade with a trivet on its head. It is thought that later artist had copy the trivet wearing cat and also developed a mythology to go along with it too. It is said that the
gotokoneko next appeared in the Toriyama Seiken's Edo-period Hyakki Tsurezure Bukuro period-百器徒然袋-A Bag of hundred Tedious Objects: Toriyama made a pun in the title of this collection, replacing the kanji-ki-鬼-demon; with the homophone-ki-器-objects.
The Five Virtues-
Now for the Five Virtues as written by Toriyama in his illustration:
'As the an who danced the Dance of the Seven Virtues forgot two of them, perhaps
you will also forget this cat or think it is just a dream.'
Toriyama makes both an allusion and a pun, Why? because the term 'gotoko', can mean two things either the trivet or 'The Five Virtues'. The Five Virtues- is also a reference to an very ancient tale by Shinano no Zenji Yukinaga.
In this tale by Shinano no Zenji Yukinaga its about a man who is supposed to dance the Dance of the Seven Virtues. The only one that can dance the Seven Virtues the embody of such a man that requires to be a warrior before the Tang Emperor of China. Sadly this man has forgotten two of the Virtues of this sacred Dance. He figures if he can't remember them, no one else will either and announces his Dance of the Five Virtues which he then performs Magnificently...
So Toriyama is making a pun, drawing a link between the object gotoko and the Five Virtues of Gotoko. Sometimes it is translated into English as the 'Five Virtues Cat, but that's incorrect for the legend. Aside from the homophone of the name, the Gotokoneko is clearly not an embodiment of manly virtues, but is at home in front of a hearth, blowing his bamboo tube to stroke the flames and wearing a trivet on its head. Well, I hope that you all enjoyed the tale of the Gotokoneko Cat my dears. I hope that you all have a safe and fun Friday the 13, tomorrow too.
Love you all so very much
Your friend always

TITANIC GRUESOME DISCOVERY IN THE SHIPS LAST LIFEBOAT-

Titanic Gruesome Discovery
In the ships last Lifeboat-
The three photos that you see taken were
on May 13,1912 almost a month after
the Titanic sank. In the photos it shows the
crewmembers from the RMS Oceanic
attempting to recover one of the doomed
lifeboats.  Inside what  they found was
quite gruesome indeed. The crewmen thought
to be the last lifeboat to leave the sinking
Titanic were three deposing body's
from the Titanic.
One boat is show being lowered from
the Titanic -Another shows approaching a
drifting lifeboat and the last photo on
the bottom show the RMS Oceanic
Crewmembers in the old lifeboat.
Good Afternoon my dearest Friends & Followers, first I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for all the support you all have given me in the pass couple of days. I have had a peek at my overview on my blog and it is quite amazing how many of you have been visiting my humble blog. For this I will continue to do my very best and finding stories and interesting tales for you all. Plus the photo's that you all seem to enjoy too!
In this tale that I found for you all my dears, is not the happiest story, but it is interesting and true. It's about a letter that was found in the last lifeboat from the Titanic. It would seem that the first letter that was found, was originally written onboard the Titanic, penned just hours before the ship embarked on its doomed maiden voyage. The letter was found in the ships last lifeboat and is being sold at a UK auction this coming month. The letter that was found, was written on April 10, 1912, before the Titanic set sail from Southampton for New York. The author of the letter is Paul Danby-He wrote the note while visiting his wife's uncle Adolphe Saalfeld, who was a passenger on the Titanic. Danby left the Titanic before it set sail and paints a fascinating picture of the ship in his note to his wife Rose, who he addresses by her nickname 'Goll'. '[MY VERY MUCH GOLL, WE ARE THE FIRST WHO WRITE A LETTER FROM THE SHIP, IT IS WONDERFULLY APPOINTED, HE WROTE, IN GERMAN, ON TITANIC-HEADED PAPER. 'UNCLE HAS A VERY LARGE CABIN NEARLY A LIVING ROOM WITH A SOFA AND A ELECTRIC VENTILATOR. I WILL TELL YOU ALL IN DETAIL LATER.']
The letter that was left by survier Saalfeld

note detailing the grisly discovery of Titanic’s last lifeboat will
be auctioned in the U.K. later this week.
The Titanic struck an icberg at 11:40pm ships time on April 14 1912 and sank just over two hours
later with the loss of more than 1,500 lives.
It seems that there are a few Titanic letters that are in existence, but this one was the cream of the crop of sorts. Why? because of its content. Its the only letter from the Titanic that actually survived, that has such superb content. its almost like being there when you read it! This is what 'Henry Aldridge & Son Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge told FoxNews.com said, "You can almost smell the paint on the letter still after all those hundred years. Saalfeld, who was travelling to America to show his collection of floral essential oils to potential clients, who survived the Titanic disaster. Saalfeld was his name the businessman who happen to be on the ship's smoking lounge enjoying a port and a cigar when the Titanic hit the iceberg, according to Henry Aldridge & Son.
It is said that Saalfeld 'WENT TO HIS CABIN-C106 PUT ON HIS COAT AND WENT TO THE DECK & ENTERED LIFEBOAT 3, BEING LATER RESCUED BY THE CARPATHIA,'
The auction house explained, in a press released, they continued to tell the story of Saalfeld the businessman who survived the Titanic disaster. It is said that the man's leather satchel contained his floral perfume samples was left behind. The satchel contained 65 glass vials & metal containers were discovered among the wreckage of Titanic by the Mir 1 submersible in 2000. The letter also represents a chapter in the eventful and ultimately tragic life of its author. So it was found that Saalfeld was born in Berlin, Danby moved to England to work for Saalfeld, a merchant and
perfumier, in 1907. He met and fell in love with Saalfeld's nice Rose the following year and married her in 1910. As a German living in England, he was interred during WWl and then moved to Amsterdam after the war, where he ran a successful business until the Nazis invaded Holland in 1940. In 1943, after turning down an offer to go into hiding, Danby was arrested by the Nazis on
account of his Jewish faith and then he was murdered at Sobibor Death camps in Poland sadly. Rose & Danby's mother Clare were also killed at Sobibor death camp in Poland too.
Inside the recovered Lifeboat-
[First Letter Onboard the Titanic up for sale]
It would seem that there were many different letters but this is another letter that was found that was  handwritten in the recovery of the lifeboat photos above, by an unidentified Oceanic passenger describes the gruesome discovery of the three corpses.
One of the corpse was wearing a dinner jacket and the bodies of two Titanic were firemen were wedged under the lifeboat seats, it explained, adding that one corpse's arms came off in the hands or the Oceanic's boarding officer. A woman's ring was also found on the lifeboat, according to the note. The corpse in the dinner jacket was later identified as a first class passenger - Thomson Beattie. The wedding ring had belonged to a Swedish passenger Elin Gerda Lindell who had reached the lifeboat briefly but then collapsible, but later drowned according to Titanic records. Her husband Edvard Bengtsson Lindell held on to Elin's ring before he died on Collapsible A. His body was never recovered sadly.
A number of Titanic passengers that made it to the lifeboat known as 'Collapsible A' when it washed off the ship deck, partly submerged, but not all survived. The bodies found by Oceanic were left on the lifeboat when Collapsible A' survivors were picked by another lifeboat.
It would seem that all the photo's that you see above and the letter. Some of the artifacts too were all sold at an auction in Devizes UK on April 23 of 2016. and brought in an estimate of between 3,000 to almost 4,500$ There were other Titanic memorabilia that came in at estimates of up to 14,000+
I don't know where the money went to, but I hope that it went to help the families of the decent of the folks that were on the Titanic.
It would seem that 'the Titanic ship of dreams' was truly the of Nightmares'. Its the Horrific elements of what truly happened in the disaster and the lost lives.
